Position Overview:

Mamow Oshki Pimagihowin programs strengthen families, support and encourage children and youth, and build community pride. Programs promote cultural awareness and enhance cultural identity, language, customs, beliefs, and traditional practices. Programs include land-based activities, parenting education, information workshops, recreational activities, community events and other family support activities. Elders assume a prominent role in cultural teaching and support to children, youth and families. . Prevention Resource Workers support, develop, organize and deliver Mamow Oshki Pimagihowin (working together to learn new life skills) prevention programming. The Prevention Resource Workers are responsible for researching and gathering relevant resource material, and mentoring Prevention Services Coordinators. The work of the Prevention Resource Worker, and all our staff, is guided by our service model: Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin - everyone working together to raise our children.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop, maintain, coordinate and distribute resources for prevention and family well-being program delivery, such as videos, books, pamphlets and structured program materials.
  • Work closely with community-based Prevention Services Coordinators to provide resources, training and mentoring.
  • Travel to communities to deliver programming and to provide support to prevention services and events.
  • Track statistics and provide regular reports to Supervisor on prevention activities in the region.
Qualifications Desired:

  • Interest in working on a team that helps families and serves remote First Nation communities. Experience with raising a family or working with children, being part of community life in small remote communities.
  • Interest in learning new skills. On the job training will be provided. Education/experience related to working with families or children and youth is an asset, but not required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous culture and the First Nation communities served by Tikinagan.
  • Knowledge of regional and community-based resources and services. Knowledgeable about traditional and recreational activities for family and children, including land-based activities.
  • Able to work effectively with First Nation leadership, local and regional service providers.
  • Good organizational and project management skills, ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to provide coaching, mentoring and partnering with assigned staff.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to speak Ojicree or Ojibway is a very strong asset.
  • Computer experience is an asset, but not required.
  • Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential..
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours.
  • A valid driver’s license, or willingness to obtain, is required.
  • Frequent travel is required including by small aircraft.
  • A Criminal Record Check, with a Vulnerable Sector Check, is required.
